The Community Prevocational Services Program is designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) who are preparing for paid competitive employment or meaningful community participation. Serving individuals throughout the five boroughs of New York City, the program uses a person-centered approach to develop transferable workplace skills and positive work habits through community-based learning experiences rather than job-specific training. By participating in volunteer opportunities, job shadowing, and other real-world activities, individuals build the foundational skills needed to pursue future employment and become more active within their communities.
Core Focus Areas
The Community Prevocational Services Program focuses on preparing individuals for future employment by developing practical workplace skills and encouraging greater independence.
Soft Skill Development
Builds essential workplace behaviors such as effective communication, problem-solving, teamwork, following directions, time management, and task completion.
Workplace Standards
Helps participants develop professional work habits, appropriate workplace social skills, personal hygiene, stamina, and the ability to adapt to routine changes.
Community Integration
Provides community-based learning through volunteer opportunities, job shadowing, and visits to local businesses that reflect real workplace expectations.
Independence Training
Develops self-sufficiency through practical skills such as community travel training and the safe use of public transportation.
The Program
Community Prevocational Services help individuals build the general employment skills needed before entering the workforce. Through community-based instruction and practical experiences, participants develop workplace behaviors, communication skills, and independent living abilities that support long-term vocational readiness.
The Program Helps Participants Develop
Participants have opportunities to strengthen skills in areas such as:
Problem-solving skills and strategies
Effective workplace communication
Appropriate workplace conduct
Following directions
Task attention and completion
General pre-employment and workplace readiness skills
These learning opportunities help individuals develop the confidence, work habits, and transferable skills needed to pursue supported or competitive employment within their communities.
Eligibility Requirements
The same participation requirements that apply to the Group Day Habilitation Program also apply to the Community Prevocational Services Program.
What to Expect
Participants engage in community-based learning experiences that emphasize workplace readiness, transferable employment skills, and practical independence rather than job-specific training. Activities may include volunteer experiences, job shadowing, community travel instruction, and opportunities to practice appropriate workplace behaviors in real-world settings. As participants build their vocational foundation, the program helps prepare them for internships, supported employment, or competitive employment opportunities based on their individual goals and readiness.
