The Health/Wellness & Social Skills Program helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) develop healthy habits, strengthen daily living skills, and build positive social relationships through structured, hands-on activities. Serving participants throughout the five boroughs of New York City, the program combines wellness education, recreational activities, life skills training, and community participation to encourage greater independence and personal well-being. Activities are delivered in a supportive, person-centered environment where participants can practice practical skills and build confidence through meaningful everyday experiences.
How It Works
The Health/Wellness & Social Skills Program provides opportunities for participants to strengthen their physical, social, and daily living skills through activities such as:
Creative & Expressive Movement
Choreography techniques for various dance styles, including hip hop and gospel, alongside stress management through dance and yoga.
Nutrition & Healthy Eating
Learning healthy choices, shopping for nutritious foods, understanding food selections, and hands-on cooking instruction for self-preparation.
Physical Fitness & Recreation
Integrated sports programs including basketball, soccer, and gymnastics that encourage physical fitness, friendship, and active fun.
Basic Life & Functional Skills
Practical training in money management, functional math, and cognitive skills that promote organizing, planning, prioritizing, and decision-making.
Community & Local Engagement
Life skills training provided near home, program, and volunteer locations, paired with structured leisure activities throughout the community.
Socialization & Self-Esteem
Building peer relationships and other social connections to strengthen self-esteem and foster meaningful community bonds.
What to Expect
Participants engage in structured activities that encourage healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and the development of practical life skills in both program and community settings. Activities are individualized to support each participant’s abilities and personal goals while providing opportunities to practice skills through recreation, wellness education, and everyday experiences. The program promotes active participation, community involvement, and continued development of skills that support greater independence and personal well-being.
